DIY Oil Change in 5 or 10 minutes

Changing the oil on your car or truck is easy, it takes only a few minutes, and its something anyone can do.

The only tools you need are a wrench and some things to keep from making a mess. The basics of it are you unscrew a plug under your vehicle and oil drains out. Then you unscrew (by hand) an oil filter that you can reach (under your hood), and screw a new one in. Then you pour new oil into your engine. Simple.

Before you start, look up what oil filter your vehicle uses. An auto parts store will do this for you, or you can use the internet or your vehicle manual. It will cost around 10 dollars or less, probably. You also need to buy the oil you are going to put into your engine. Again, the information about what oil can be got from your auto parts store, the internet or your car manual. If you have a lot of miles on your vehicle (over 100,000) you may want to use high mileage motor oil. All oils are quite similar.

You need an oil pan or anything like an oil pan that can catch the oil when it pours out of your engine. You will need a way to dispose of your oil later, too. Oil is recyclable (so long as you don’t mix it with antifreeze, brake fluid or any other fluids). You can even drain your oil filter by puncturing it with a screwdriver or something, and draining it into your storage container. You can store the oil in a plastic milk jug,, empty oil bottle or anything else. You can call vehicle service stations and recycle stations to ask if they take used motor oil. Many do.

Here are two videos. They both show the same thing: how to change your oil in a couple minutes
