Cheetahs don't roar

Cheetahs don’t roar because they don’t have the anatomy possessed by other large cats. A special two-piece hyoid bone in the throats of other big cats allows them to roar.

Cheetah’s have a one-piece hyoid bone.

Cheetahs make other noises. Their chirp can be heard miles away.

What are some of the other cheetah noises?

Purrs, bleats, barks, growls, and hisses.

Many of their vocalizations are totally unlike those of any other cat, and we have special words for them.

Churring: staccato growl, high-pitched

Nyam-nyam: cubs’ sound when feeding

Ihn-ihn: mother’s call to her young

Staccato purr: sound made by courting males

Actually, there are four cats that roar.  Can you name them?

Lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar.
